After 5 years of non-stop working, Rick would take a much-deserved break that would unintentionally last two years. But when he returned to the studio, he created one of his finest albums to date, Rock of Life. Billboard describes the album as "harder and lyrically more personal than ever before...Should enable Springfield to shed his fluffy image once and for all."
Although some songs can be viewed as rather dark or pessimistic in nature, Hold On To Your Dreams was a song about hope and determination, something Rick had a lot of.
"It was kind of an anthem for me while I was pretty down for a long time. And I had some friends who were in a similar position and I almost wrote it for all of us. It was just a reminder basically, the dream only dies within you. It's the only place that dies if it does."
Just as Rick was about to hit the road again and tour to promote his new album, he had a horrendous ATV accident that left him with several broken bones and would take him more than a year to fully recover from.
When he was ready to go back to work it was the screen instead of the stage that he turned to. After a five-year hiatus from acting, Rick starred in a CBS pilot called Nick Knight about a cop who was also a vampire. Unfortunately CBS was unsure about the potential of such a scenario. While CBS debated on the subject, Rick went on to appear in the made for cable movies Dead Reckoning and Silent Motive.
Then another television series opportunity came his way with the science fiction/action program Human Target. It was during this time that CBS had now decided to give a revamped Nick Knight series, called Forever Knight, a try. Unfortunately Rick was already committed to Human Target and the role of Nick Knight was recast. ABC ran seven episodes of Human Target on Saturday evenings in the summer of '92. One of the toughest time slots for any show to survive in, and Human Target received only mediocre ratings and was not picked up for the fall season.
But Rick continued to act, appearing in the pilot for another failed ABC series called Just Desserts, plus a couple of other television movies, In the Shadows, Someone Is Watching (a.k.a. With Harmful Intent) and A Change of Place.
In 1995 Rick would find himself in yet another television series, High Tide, and this time the series would last a little longer than seven episodes, in fact this one would last three years. Rick portrayed Mick Barrett, a retired cop who wanted away from the action and to spend his time on the beach but kept being dragged back in by his brother.
Rick would also guest-star in four episodes on the short lived Aaron Spelling television series Robin's Hoods during that time.
Although acting had been his primary occupation for a number of years, Rick never stopped writing. And even with is busy schedule on High Tide, Rick found time to collaborate with fellow musicians Tim Pierce and Bob Marlette and record a few demos which would be released overseas by MTM Music under the group name Sahara Snow.
