With his strikingly handsome looks and grossly underrated talent as a musician, songwriter and performer, Rick Springfield has become one of the first Australian artists to achieve far greater success abroad than he did in his native homeland. With his face known daily to millions of Americans, courtesy of his character of Dr. Noah Drake in the TV soapie General Hospital, he shrewdly re-invented his musical career in the world’s biggest pop market, achieving an enviable record of 11 charting albums (5 Top 30) and more than 20 charting singles (5 Top 10 hits, and a #1 single). After years in the wilderness, it must have been sweet success for Springfield when his U.S. success finally gave him long overdue recognition at home, including his first ever #1 single, ‘Jessie’s Girl’.
Rick Springfield was born Richard Lewis Springthorpe on 23 August 1949, in Sydney, Australia, and seemed destined to be a musician. He had his first guitar at age 14 and was soon playing in various bands, including ‘Wickedy Wak’. His big break occurred in 1969 when he joined ‘The Zoot’, and underrated group, who scored a Top 5 hit with a cover of ‘Eleanor Rigby’. In 1971 the group split and Rick soon had his first solo hit, the classic ‘Speak To the Sky’ (Australian Top 5) (a re-recording was released in the U.S. in 1972 reaching #14). He released his first album ‘Beginnings’ in 1972, and then signed to producer Robie Porter’s Wizard Records, releasing his second album ‘Comic Book Heroes’. ‘General Hospital’ wasn’t Rick’s first taste of acting success, as shortly afterwards in 1973 he starred as an animated character in the U.S. TV series ‘Mission Magic’.
Although he had moderate success in the next couple of years, the mid 1970s were lean years for Springfield. His U.S. label dropped him, and in 1977 he took up acting, playing small roles in various Universal TV drams, when he scored the role in ‘General Hospital’. Although acting in a soapie can spell the death knell for any musician’s credibility, in Rick Springfield’s case it was the opposite. He signed with RCA Records in the U.S., and released his first album ‘Working Class Dog’ and single ‘Jessie’s Girl’ (#1 in the U.S. and Australia), with the follow up ‘I’ve Done Everything For You’ (U.S. Top 10), capped off by a Grammy for ‘Best Male Rock Performance’. His second RCA album ‘Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet’ also reaching the U.S. Top 10, and another smash single ‘Don’t Talk to Strangers’ (U.S. #2 and Top 10 at home). His third album, ‘Living in Oz’, a repeat story, another Top 10 hit, ‘Affair of the Heart’, followed by film soundtrack ‘Hard To Hold’ (starring Springfield) in 1984, he has released only three albums ‘Tao’ (1985), ‘Rock of Life’ (1988) and ‘Karma’ (1999) and the ‘Platinum Greatest Hits’ in 1989.
This Legendary release is exciting as it’s the first time that 50 Rick Springfield recordings have been available on one release, and the first Australian artist featured in the series. It’s only fitting that it be Rick Springfield, as he truly is one of our most talented exports. David Rowe
